We recommend a different way to discover Gipuzkoa this autumn by taking a fascinating journey to the past. Travel underground to the mines of Arditurri, to the replica cave of Ekain or to Arrikrutz, where water and rock have been battling for centuries.

Arrikrutz, the Caves of Oñati

Located in the heart of the Aizkorri mountain range, Arrikrutz was sculpted over centuries of erosion of water on rock. To visit the caves we recommend one of the following three options: Espeleo-Arrikrutz, a 3.5-hour guided tour for adults 18 and over. On this tour you’ll enjoy the beauty of the cave and the spectacular subterranean Aldaola River riverbed. Espeleo-Txiki, an unforgettable experience for families with kids 6 and over. An experience that combines caving fun and exploration of the underground world (2.5 hours). Gallery 53. View from the walkway A 500-metre long walkway allows visitors to easily admire this geological gem and learn about the ancient inhabitants of this cave (60 minutes).

Arditurri, a mining experience

The Arditurri Mines are located in the depths of the Aiako Harria mountains (Peñas de Aia in Spanish), in the municipality of Oiartzun. Mining operations began in Roman times and continued almost uninterruptedly for over 2,000 years, producing silver, lead, flurorite and iron. A visit to the heart of the mines of Arditurri is a journey through time. Visitors will feel the magical atmosphere inside as they learn about the different periods in the history of these mines.

Ekainberri, Basque cave art

Ekainberri, the magnificent replica of the original Ekain cave, is located in the beautiful Sastarrain valley in the municipality of Zestoa, not far from San Sebastian. Ekainberri boasts the most spectacular cave paintings on the Basque coast. Embark on a journey to the origins of Basque culture at this UNESCO World Heritage Site.  Ekainberri can only be visited on a guided tour. Advance booking recommended. Learn how people lived, hunted and made fire here 15,000 years ago. Ekain is considered the finest example of cave art in the Basque Country.
